Reading the numbers

MgCl₂ against elemental magnesium

Magnesium chloride hexahydrate is roughly 47% magnesium chloride by mass; the balance is water of crystallisation. Account for that and the elemental magnesium content lands near 11.9%.

Elemental magnesium is the figure to compare across brands. A percentage quoted against a different compound, or against the hexahydrate rather than the magnesium itself, is not the same number.

Moisture and insolubles

Moisture is mass you pay for and then evaporate. At or under 1.0% it is negligible. A higher figure means water in the bag.

Water insolubles are the fraction that never dissolves. It ends up in the filter and on the floor. Under 0.15% keeps that load minimal.

Heavy metals

Tested as lead, reported under 10 ppm. It matters because people swim in the water and the mineral stays in it between top-ups.

Every batch is tested and the result is published on the certificate of analysis for that batch.

Particle size

A 1–4 mm flake dissolves readily in front of a return jet and raises very little dust when the bag is opened.

Fine powder dissolves quickly but blows around. Coarse lumps sit on the floor. The flake sits between the two.

Why publishing it matters

Most pool minerals on the Australian market are sold without a published composition. You are asked to compare a price per kilogram without knowing how much magnesium a kilogram contains, how much of it is water, or how much will not dissolve.

Those four things decide what the product does in the water and what it costs you per season. Without those figures a like-for-like comparison is not possible.

We publish the specification, the batch certificate of analysis and the safety data sheet, and we keep them consistent from delivery to delivery. If a figure changes, the document changes with it.
